From December 2025, the Netherlands will begin testing the use of Super EcoCombis, which are extra-long vehicle combinations, with the objective of analysing vehicle behaviour in traffic and assessing the reactions of other road users. The Super EcoCombi consists of a tractor unit and two 13.60-metre semi-trailers connected by a special bogie. This configuration allows a single unit to transport the same load as two standard 16.5-metre articulated lorries, offering clear advantages in terms of productivity, CO2 emissions reduction, and alleviation of the chronic driver shortage. Similar trials are already underway in Finland, Sweden, and Spain. Germany has also launched a test phase on selected logistics corridors. To ensure the safety of these vehicles on public roads, a series of mandatory requirements has been established: a maximum length of 32 metres, a maximum weight of 72 tonnes, no more than three articulation points, blind spot detection systems, 360-degree driver visibility, sufficient acceleration power, and compliance with the heavy goods vehicle regulations.
